Usage Instructions

At this time, Earthquake notifications are only available on iOS, not macOS.

Periodically check to make sure notifications are coming in as expected by switching to a low global magnitude setting. Report any issues through the "Contact the developer David Gross" section.

Please wait to get the "Notification settings successfully changed" message after changing your notification settings. Change your notification settings on a stable network connection.

Reliable earthquake info is usually alerted within 3-5 minutes for continental USA earthquakes, and within 30 minutes for worldwide earthquakes.

If you are using your iOS device when an earthquake notification comes in, pull down or 3D Touch on the noticiation to reveal a map of the epicenter. Tap on the notification to jump to the earthquake in the app.

If you are not using your device when notifation comes in, access it later through the main iOS "Earlier Today" notifications drop down and either 3D Touch if you have an enabled device, or slide to the left and hit "View" if you do not have 3D Touch.

FAQ

Q: How do I delete a custom location notification recipe?

A: Swipe the table row with the recipe you want to delete to the left and tap the Delete button that appears.

Q: How do I change the units of measurement in the app from miles to kilometers or vice-versa?

A: From the menu screen, tap the upper-left button to toggle the units of measurement.

Q: What does a negative depth mean?

A: This means the earthquake epicenter was above ground, usually within a mountainous region.

Q: When I get a notification, "sig" is mentioned, how does that work?

A: It is a complicated formula that takes into account affected human population and infrastructure costs, but any event with sig greater than 600 is considered potentially devastating.

Q: I am from a different country like Turkey with many earthquakes, but most of them are not listed. Why?

A: The USGS timeline only reports the largest earthquakes from non-United States countries, and usually with a significant delay.

Q: What do the "Felt By" values mean?

A: This is the total number of felt reports submitted to the USGS "Did You Feel It?" system.

Q: I have it set to "mi", but I am still getting km distances in the notifications. Why?

A: Due to technical limitations, the epicenter distance and depth text in the notifications is reported only in km at this time. All other app settings will be shown in mi, as the settings suggests. The radius cutoff you select for any local alert will be the unit you have selected locally in the app.

Q: What does USGS stand for?

A: USGS stands for the United States Geological Survey.
